Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ's

What is AMI?

Advanced Metering Infrastructure or AMI is a technology that allows for a two-way communication on a metering network. The meters communicate with nearby two-way field collector radios that send data back to a database.  The usage data is collected in increments, water meters will collect hourly usage data and electric meters collect data at 15-minute intervals. This data will be downloaded to the customer’s account daily.

What is the advanced metering infrastructure project?

Advanced metering infrastructure or AMI is a technology that will allow the City of Buffalo Utility Billing to read your meter remotely.  This project will involve installing new electric and water meters throughout the City.  The new equipment will allow us to provide improved service, operational efficiencies and better billing information.

What is the reason for the upgrade of equipment?

Buffalo Municipal Utilities upgrade their equipment according to industry standards which includes AMI meters. Equipment upgrades allow the utilities to work more efficiently and cost effectively, lowering pressure on rates.

What will the Advanced Metering cost me?

There will be no additional cost to the customer for the new metering system.   The project is being funded through the City’s regular budgeting process.

How does Advanced Metering benefit me?

AMI will provide you with better information as to how you utilize your electric and water utilities.  You will be able to access more detailed information about your usage using the Spry Engage web and app-based customer portal.  This information will also allow us to better answer your questions and issues regarding usage.

Is Advanced Metering Infrastructure new technology?

No - AMI has been around Minnesota since the early 2000’s and is considered a utility standard throughout the United States.  AMI will allow for a faster and  exact collection of  utility usage readings; as well as improving safety and providing overall greater efficiency.

Is my information safe?

Yes - data transmitted from the meter through the AMI system is encrypted throughout the entire process.

How are you able to my reading from someone else’s reading?

Each AMI meter has its own unique identifier number which is transmitted along with the meter reading.  The unique number is compared to your account record electronically to ensure a match.

Will the City be able to control anything in my home or business?

No - The City’s access stops at the meter.

Will the electronic box on the meter device interfere with other electronic equipment in my home or office?

No - The radio transmission operates in compliance with Federal Communications Commission or FCC regulations to avoid interference with other electronic devices.

Are the electromagnetic fields produced by the new equipment harmful to my health?

No - AMI emits substantially lower exposure levels than more common devices that emit radio frequency (RF), such as baby monitors, cellular phones and wireless routers and represent no known health hazards.  If you have additional questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Buffalo Municipal Utilities at AMI_FAQ@ci.buffalo.mn.us .
