Overview

City of Buffalo Municipal Utilities is beginning a new era of service. The Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) project will involve installing new electric and water meters throughout the entire city. The new equipment will allow us to provide improved service, operational efficiencies, and better billing information.

The installation of the new smart meters will begin in the spring of 2024. Due to the unique features of each type of installation, they will be installed by neighborhood with the assistance of a third-party vendor - Utiliuse.

What is Advanced Metering Infrastructure?

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is an integrated system of equipment, communications, and information management systems for utilities to remotely collect customer water usage data in real time, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. AMI uses radio-based technology to read water meters, which eliminates the need for manual meter reads.

  • Traditional meters are read once per month. Advanced meters read themselves multiple times per day, allowing a much clearer picture of energy use and more opportunities for energy efficiency.
  • Advanced meters enable us to better integrate renewable energy and distribute energy resources (DERs) into our grid, reinforcing our goal of providing 100% renewable energy by 2030.
  • Advanced meters can give faster warnings of outages and irregularities, allowing us to respond to issues quickly.
  • Advanced meters can allow electric service to be connected or disconnected in seconds (for example, when a family moves in or out of a home), saving the hundreds of trips that our crews usually have to perform ... and saving the greenhouse gas emissions from all that driving, too!
  • Advanced meters can allow the creation of lower "off-peak" electric rates, charging less during times of day when there's lower electrical demand.

Utiliuse Employee Identifiers

Utiliuse employees will be properly identified with their company logo on their vehicles, uniforms, and vests. Utiliuse employees will not need to enter homes at any time to perform work.

The work that will be performed will involve technicians going onto the property of our utility customers to remove the current meter serving the property and replace it with a new AMI meter. The installation typically takes less than 45 minutes for each location, during which time the water to the property will be temporarily turned off.
