What is a PIT count and why does it matter?

The 2020 Point-in-Time (PIT) Count will be held Jan. 25-Feb. 1, 2023. It is Minnesota’s annual count of all persons experiencing homelessness. It happens nationwide every year and is required by HUD, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The PIT Count is a community effort to identify constituents experiencing homelessness, specifically those that are unsheltered, living on the street or in a place not meant for habitation (such as a car or abandoned building). In Minnesota, we also count those that are doubled up (which means they are “couch hopping” or temporarily staying with family or friends).

The PIT Count helps our community recognize who is experiencing homelessness (like a census). It helps examine trends, changes, and leads to a better understanding of how to target resources.

PIT data is used to allocate funding for resources to our communities.
